Mechanical Engineering
Probably the most classic engineering discipline involving a fundamental knowledge which is perhaps even comparable with physics in terms of scope is mechanical engineering, also known by the earlier term machine construction, which deals with the development, design and production of machines of every kind. Mathematics, engineering mechanics including strength theory, design theory as well as production technology, automation technology, the principles of electrical engineering and material sciences belong to the specialist knowledge of the mechanical engineer.
A rough classification of the main specialist areas and areas of application of mechanical engineering can be made as follows:
- Power engines and machines
- Machines for mining
- Machines for the processing industry
- Vehicle construction and transport
- Gear and drive technology
- General mechanical engineering (e.g. jig and fixture construction)
- Machine components (e.g. connecting elements, roller bearings)
